The buyer question
Forklift automation has to prove the handoff, not just the drive.
An autonomous forklift may navigate well in an open demo yet struggle with pallet quality, rack tolerances, mixed traffic, dock transitions, staging logic or operator recovery. The evaluation should follow the pallet through the actual process: pickup, travel, placement, confirmation, exception, recharge and repeat.
Also distinguish a vehicle manufacturer from a project integrator. A complete deployment may require site mapping, rack or conveyor interfaces, WMS or WCS connection, safety validation and local commissioning.
Typical autonomous forklift applications
Horizontal pallet transport
Move pallets between receiving, storage, production, staging and dispatch while testing mixed traffic, intersections and priority logic.
Rack putaway and retrieval
Evaluate fork geometry, load center, rack tolerances, aisle width, height, placement accuracy and damaged-pallet recovery.
Production material flow
Connect raw-material stores, line-side supermarkets and production areas with station handoffs, empty-load logic and replenishment tasks.
Dock and staging movement
Clarify loading assumptions, outdoor or semi-outdoor conditions, doors, ramps, trailer interfaces and human-controlled exceptions.

Safety and integration questions
- How are safety zones, speed limits, people detection, emergency stops and manual takeover configured and validated?
- What happens when a pallet is missing, misaligned, damaged, too heavy or not detected at the station?
- Which system creates missions and confirms completion: WMS, WES, WCS, PLC or the fleet manager?
- How are doors, lifts, conveyors, charging stations and fire or restricted areas interfaced?
- What site acceptance tests prove safe behavior over the real shift pattern, not just a scripted path?
