The buying decision
Storage density is only one part of an AS/RS business case.
An automated storage supplier may design the storage structure, cranes or shuttles, conveyors, lifts, controls and warehouse software—or may expect a separate integrator to join the project. The decision should connect storage objectives to inbound, putaway, replenishment, picking, dispatch and exception handling.
For overseas buyers, clarify whether you are buying equipment, a storage subsystem or a complete material-flow solution. That distinction changes the supplier shortlist, quote comparison and commissioning plan.
Common automated storage formats
Stacker-crane AS/RS
Useful for structured pallet or unit-load storage where aisle layout, rack height, load geometry and crane performance can be clearly defined.
Shuttle systems
Shuttles can support dense pallet or tote storage, but compare lane logic, shuttle quantity, lifts, transfers, retrieval priority and recovery behavior.
Pallet AS/RS
Focus on pallet quality, load center, rack tolerance, fire and seismic requirements, throughput by direction and interfaces with forklifts or conveyors.
Tote and mini-load systems
Compare tote dimensions, bin presentation, picking rate, replenishment, ergonomics, lift strategy, slotting logic and order-profile assumptions.
High-density automated storage
Density claims should be tested against SKU mix, access frequency, height limits, inventory rules, replenishment and the cost of slower retrieval.
Goods-to-person systems
Storage and picking should be evaluated together: workstation design, batch logic, operator interaction, accuracy, replenishment and downstream sortation.

Integration is where an AS/RS quote becomes a project.
Ask the supplier to walk through the full material-flow sequence: receiving, identification, putaway, replenishment, picking, exception handling, inventory reconciliation and dispatch. If conveyors, AMRs, forklifts, sortation or goods-to-person stations are involved, document the handoff between systems.
- Define whether the supplier provides WCS, WES, middleware or only equipment controls.
- Agree how WMS tasks, inventory states, alarms and manual overrides are exchanged.
- Test empty locations, blocked lanes, lost loads, damaged pallets, bad scans and power recovery.
- Set FAT and site-acceptance criteria around the operational flow, not only individual machine cycles.
