Warehouse robotics buyer guide

Chinese AMR & AGV Manufacturers

How to investigate the Chinese AMR and AGV ecosystem, separate mobile-robot hardware from project delivery, and qualify suppliers for a real warehouse or factory environment.

The buyer question

A mobile robot is only one part of the material-flow system.

Chinese AMR and AGV manufacturers may offer the robot, navigation, fleet manager, charging equipment and integration support—or only some of those layers. Your shortlist should reflect who owns route design, traffic logic, pallet or tote interfaces, safety validation, software connection and commissioning at the destination site.

For an international buyer, the useful question is not simply “Which AMR is cheapest?” It is “Which company can prove this movement problem in an environment like ours, and what remains for our integrator or plant team to own?”

AMR vs AGV: the distinction to clarify

QuestionAGV projectAMR project
NavigationOften follows defined routes, markers, reflectors, wires or mapped paths.Usually relies on onboard mapping and autonomous navigation, with route behavior managed in software.
Best fitRepeatable movement with stable routes, stations and traffic patterns.More flexible movement where routes, destinations or traffic change more often.
What to testRoute accuracy, station handoff, obstacle behavior, recovery and traffic control.Map creation, localization, dynamic obstacles, fleet decisions and recovery from exceptions.
Commercial riskAssumptions about floor, markers, stations and route changes may be under-scoped.Demo flexibility may not prove throughput, fleet stability or integration discipline.

The labels are not a substitute for a supplier’s actual navigation architecture. Ask the company to demonstrate the behavior in your site conditions.

What to compare across Chinese AMR and AGV suppliers

Payload and interface

Check rated payload, load center, pallet or tote geometry, forks or fixtures, transfer height, lift stroke and tolerance for uneven loads.

Operating environment

Ask about floor flatness, ramps, narrow aisles, dust, temperature, mixed traffic, people, doors, fire zones and reflective or changing surfaces.

Navigation and safety

Review localization, obstacle detection, safety zones, emergency behavior, speed modes, manual recovery and how the system is validated on site.

Fleet management

Compare task allocation, traffic control, charging strategy, battery state, congestion handling, dashboards, logs, alarms and recovery tools.

APIs and software

Request interface documentation for WMS, WES, WCS, MES or PLC connections, plus data fields, events, authentication, offline behavior and version policy.

Export and support

Clarify manuals, spare parts, remote access, response model, local service options, language coverage, training and who supports software after handover.

Ask for integration proof, not only a robot video.

A serious evaluation should include a process map and a test plan. Ask the supplier to show how a mission is created, how a robot receives a load, what happens when a station is blocked, how a failed scan is handled and how an operator restarts the system after an emergency stop.

How Automate China helps with an AMR / AGV search

We research relevant Chinese companies, clarify whether each is a manufacturer, software provider, integrator or trading channel, contact selected candidates and organize the questions needed for a meaningful comparison. If the project warrants it, we can support meetings, demonstrations or a targeted China visit.

FAQ

AMR and AGV supplier questions.

Should I buy an AMR or an AGV?

That depends on route stability, payload handling, site constraints, traffic, change frequency and software requirements. Define the movement task first and ask suppliers to demonstrate the relevant exception cases.

Do AMR suppliers also provide WMS integration?

Some may offer integration support or APIs, but the scope varies. Confirm which system owns tasks, inventory, exceptions, data and commissioning before comparing quotes.

What should an overseas buyer request first?

Start with a short application brief, payload and load geometry, route or layout, shift pattern, environment, integration context, destination country and desired timing. Detailed engineering can follow after supplier fit is established.
