When a buyer-side consultant is useful

A consultant is most useful when the buyer knows the production problem but does not yet know the right supplier category, technical scope, or acceptance criteria. That is common with custom automation, robot cells, machine vision, packaging lines, and production line upgrades where the wrong RFQ can attract the wrong suppliers.

Consulting is also useful when several suppliers are quoting different scopes. One supplier may include tooling, PLC work, and installation while another excludes those items but appears cheaper. A buyer-side review makes those gaps visible before deposit.

Is this the same as a sourcing agent?

There is overlap, but consulting focuses more on scope, technical risk, proposal review, and acceptance criteria. Sourcing adds supplier search, outreach, and shortlist management.
